CAPN’s Executive Director, Deepti Gurung, was honored with the distinguished UNHCR Nansen Award for the Asia-Pacific region, on October 14, 2024, becoming the first Nepali woman to receive this prestigious recognition.

Established in 1954, the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award honours individuals, groups, and organizations who have taken extraordinary action to protect refugees, as well as internally displaced and stateless people. Presented annually across five regions, Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa. The award acknowledges outstanding contributions to the protection of human rights and the promotion of dignity for the most vulnerable populations. Deepti Gurung was recognized for her exceptional and tireless efforts in advocating for gender equal nationality laws and those who are affected due to the lack of it. These efforts have consistently promoted human dignity, social inclusion, and fairness. This global recognition is a historic moment for Nepal, placing the country firmly on the global human rights map. It not only honors Deepti’s deep personal dedication and impact, but also highlights the powerful role grassroots advocacy plays in protecting the rights of the most vulnerable. Her journey continues to inspire all of us at CAPN to stay committed to creating a more just, inclusive, and dignified society for everyone.
