CAPN’s Executive Director, Ms. Deepti Gurung, and Program and Admin Assistant, Ms. Sangeeta Karki, represented CAPN at the Peer Learning Exchange on Community Paralegals and Citizenship Rights held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from Nov 11 to Nov 15, 2024. The five-day workshop was organized by NAMATI and the Grassroots Justice Network bringing together community-based organizations from across the region. This exchange was a platform for participants to share experiences and knowledge on citizenship and community paralegal approaches in the region. Through interactive sessions, peer collaboration, and site visits to organizations such as Yayasan Chow Kit and Asylum Access Malaysia, the participants explored innovative strategies to support individuals affected by gender unequal citizenship laws and marginalized communities. This experience allowed CAPN to gain valuable insights into enhancing grassroots advocacy through community-based paralegal work. It also gave us an opportunity to discuss our strategies and gain knowledge from people who share the same commitment to equality, justice, and dignity. Building on this learning, CAPN is committed to integrate the knowledge and strategies gained into our upcoming paralegal program. These insights will also help us integrate updates to our training manual, ensuring our efforts remain responsive, effective, and aligned with CAPN’s mission of advocating for gender equal citizenship laws.
