CAPN held a two-day internal seminar at Hotel View Bhaktapur on March 11-12, 2025 aiming to deepen the understanding of Nepal’s citizenship laws, share findings of recent study on “Implementation of Citizenship Laws in Nepal” and refine our advocacy strategies. Bringing together our team, board members, research consultants, and legal experts, the seminar served as a major platform to learn about the implementation challenges of citizenship laws within the current legal framework and to strategize for a more inclusive and gender-equal future. Our first day focused on the legal foundation of Nepal’s citizenship laws. We explored the historical trajectory of these laws, comparing past and present provisions to understand how citizenship laws have evolved over time. A group activity was also organised, where the CAPN team analyzed hypothetical cases using constitutional provisions, emphasised on the complexities of legal language and the lack of accessibility at local legal. The analysis of real-life case scenarios highlighted the critical importance of gender equality. The second day focused on the application of the study, reviewing & updating CAPN’s current advocacy strategy. Building on these findings, we proposed strategic advocacy actions, such as using visual storytelling through animations and infographics to make the data accessible to advocate for legal reforms. The combined legal analysis with on-the-ground insights, will guide our next steps to cultivate a research-driven approach that reinforces CAPN’s mission of advocating for gender equal nationality rights in Nepal.
